UMTA runs a full slate of in-house moots and mock trials every year, then takes our strongest advocates on the road to face top universities across the province. Winners of every UMTA competition receive a $2,000 LSAT prep course from WizePrep, and Red Bull keeps the whole room energized from start to finish.

Our first official moot court competition of 2026. Teams examined how racial profiling can affect police conduct and the justice system, and the advocacy on display was some of the strongest we have ever seen in-house.

  • Champions: Grace Philemon & Nevaeh Miller
  • Finalists: Katrina Chan & Tasvi Mehta
Both champions received a $2,000 WizePrep LSAT course, and Red Bull kept competitors fueled all weekend.

UMTA's flagship mock trial was the largest ever hosted, with 48 competitors across 8 teams of six. The case centered on an accidental death at a frat party and asked competitors to grapple with the criminal law issue of causation.

  • Champions: Garvit Vadera (captain), Katrina Chan, Tore Veltri, Tasvi Mehta, Sarah Edwards & Julia Rubino, defending their 2024-25 title with a second straight victory
  • Runners-up: Captains Xavier Durocher & Tethloach Mat with Ali Al-Mashhadani, Hassan Howidi, Julia Oraha & Joya Salibi

R. v. Zacharias

Not only UMTA's biggest moot to date, but the largest competition the club has ever hosted: 60 competitors across 30 teams argued whether evidence discovered after an unlawful investigative detention and sniffer-dog search should be excluded under the Charter.

  • Champion: Abhilaksh, who competed solo after his teammate fell ill the night before, winning the largest moot in club history and the $2,000 prize
  • Runners-up: Masimo Gualtieri & Andrew Wigeluk

R. v. Campbell

UMTA's first-ever moot featured 10 teams of two examining whether police violated Charter privacy rights by inserting themselves into a private text-message conversation on a seized phone without a warrant.

  • Champions: Sughra Ashori & Grace Philemon, in their first ever moot
  • Runners-up: Mock trial veterans Kailyana Gelinas & Elizabeth Spiridon

UWaterloo Black & Gold Invitational

UMTA's first-ever provincial mock trial win. Matthew Livingstone, Joseph Murtagh, Kailyana Gelinas, Emma Northcott, Elizabeth Spiridon and Faadel Asfari went undefeated through all six matches at one of the most competitive tournaments in the country.

  • Top Lawyer: Joseph Murtagh, named the top lawyer of the entire tournament

In their first-ever moot, Joseph Murtagh and Matthew Livingstone took home 1st place and the $1,000 prize.

  • Top Oralist: Matthew Livingstone, named the top oralist of the competition
  • Runners-up: UMTA's very own Natalija Crvenkovski & Gabriela Meo, making it an all-Windsor final

Joseph Murtagh, Matthew Livingstone, Kailyana Gelinas, Emma Northcott, Zaina Hassan and Elizabeth Spiridon finished second place at Western's annual mock trial tournament, capping off UMTA's strongest travel season to date.

Criminal Law Panel Discussion

UMTA hosted its first ever panel discussion, featuring four criminal law professionals: two Crown attorneys and two defence lawyers. The panelists shared their perspectives on criminal practice, advocacy, and building a career in the field, and stuck around to network with members afterward.

More panels and networking events are planned for the 2026-27 season.
